Bach at New Year’s- “Virtuoso Concerti for the New Year!”

Saturday, January 2 at 7:30 pm

The Berkshire Bach Ensemble, under the direction of harpsichordist, Kenneth Cooper, brings Eugene Drucker, Benjamin Luxon, and many other renowned soloists together for a celebratory evening of Vivaldi, Corelli, and of course, Bach!

This year, the Berkshire Bach Society is celebrating its 25th season of bringing Baroque music to the Berkshires with Johann Sebastian Bach as the focal point.

While the iconic “Bach at New Year’s” series most often includes all six of the Brandenburg Concerti led by the Society’s music director and harpsichordist, Kenneth Cooper, this year is one of the occasional departures.  Over the past 25 seasons, the Berkshire Bach Ensemble has grown to include a musically rich and deep collection of outstanding soloists. This year, the programming is designed to give these soloists the opportunity to shine.  A sample of featured artists includes violinist Eugene Drucker in Bach’s Violin Concerto #1, trumpeter Jerry Serfass in Bach’s Brandenburg #2, trumpeters Allan Dean and Neil Mueller in Vivaldi’s Concerto in C for 2 Trumpets, and baritone narrator Benjamin Luxon in Corelli’s Christmas Concerto. While Joseph Silverstein had been slated as soloist in Brandenburg #3, Eugene Drucker and Joel Pitchon will share those solo parts in memory of our dear friend. Oboist Meg Owens, violinist Ronald Gorevic and flutist Judith Mendenhall complete the robust roster of soloists, with Kenneth Cooper directing the ensemble of 20 from the harpsichord.

In Berkshire Bach’s 25th anniversary programming, Dr. Cooper adds new trumpet ornaments in the Vivaldi Double Concerto, his adaptation of the famous lines from Luke in Corelli’s Christmas Concerto, and, as ever, a little fun with the Adagio for the third Brandenburg Concerto, making for a truly celebratory affair!
