Signature Sounds Presents: Lori McKenna w/ very special guest Chris Smither

Sunday, March 12 at 3:00 pm

Lori McKenna has become one of Nashville’s most in-demand country songwriters, with four 2017 GRAMMY award nominations including Best Country Song and Best Americana album of the year. Her songs have been cut by artists such as Alison Krauss, Reba, Faith Hill, Tim McGraw and Keith Urban, with chart hits like Little Big Town’s “Girl Crush,” “Your Side of the Bed” and “Sober.” Her credits have landed her five Boston Music Awards, BMI awards and featured performances at the Sundance Film Festival and the Newport Folk Festival. Along with her successes as a songwriter, McKenna has released ten critically acclaimed studio albums.

McKenna’s tenth album,The Bird & The Rifle revels in the routines and events that may seem mundane but are the most important, transcendent moments of our lives. McKenna doesn’t just notice the quiet and ordinary, she delights in it – effortlessly transforming the average to extraordinary. The result is over a decade worth of songs filled with honest stories and melodic depth, and her latest is no exception.

A profound songwriter, Chris Smither draws deeply from the blues, American folk music, modern poets, and philosophers. The Associated Press writes, “Smither is an American original, a product of the musical melting pot, and one of the absolute best singer-songwriters in the world.” Like a handful of other musicians whose careers began in the 1960’s blues revival, guitarist, singer and songwriter Smither can take pride in the fact that he’s been there since the beginning. Bonnie Raitt covered his song ” Love Me Like A Man,” with Raitt calling Smither “her Eric Clapton.” Smither’s most recent recording project is Still On the Levee (2014) – a double-CD retrospective. Recorded in New Orleans, this career-spanning project features fresh new takes on 24 iconic songs from his vast career.
