This fun-filled and enriching summer program nurtures each child’s self-esteem and fosters self-discipline, art appreciation, creative thinking, trust, and teamwork. We provide a supportive environment that encourages participants to have the confidence to try new things and to believe in their abilities as they express their talents and have fun on stage. We offer every child the thrill of participating in an actual show on the same stage as some of the greatest performers in the history of American entertainment — the Academy of Music! Outstanding and supportive professionals with notable accomplishments will direct the workshop. Instructors will provide participants with opportunities for artistic exploration, self-expression, skill-building, and teamwork by exposing them to all aspects of musical theater.

Please be aware of the following notices:

  • We will be adhering to state and local health mandates as we decide how to proceed. The health and safety of our students and staff are our highest priorities.
  • If mandates allow for gatherings of 30 people, we will offer our typical in-person camp experience with 30 students; we will not offer a virtual component.
  • If Massachusetts COVID mandates limit group size, we will offer an in-person experience to a reduced group size as determined by health recommendations AND an additional virtual experience, allowing families to customize an in-person, virtual, or hybrid style. Continue reading for more information.
  • If Massachusetts COVID mandates prohibit in-person gatherings, we will expand our virtual summer programming and not meet in person.

First Act! One-week program

Ages 5-7 years

Register Here!

The First Act! Workshop caters to our youngest performers and takes place in the historic Academy of Music. The day is divided into several sessions, each taught by a performance professional who loves being on stage and working with kids. Students brand new to group singing, and dance will have the chance to learn how to work as a team while we explore basic skills involved with a musical theater performance. The daily schedule balances high-energy activities with structured focus and skill-building to help prepare your child for future programs as they grow with us. During the day, we will play physical theater games, sing songs, and learn a corresponding dance that fits in with our mystery theme. Although there is no final showcase for our littlest performers, by the end of the week, students get a taste of what it takes to put on a cohesive show and be a part of a musical theater ensemble.

Two-week programs

The musical theater workshop curriculum takes place in the historic Academy of Music and includes time to build new skills and have fun. The day is divided into several sessions, each taught by a performance professional who loves being on stage and working with kids. The program includes training in singing, dancing, and acting (of course!), but it also introduces some of the “backstage” activities that are often overlooked, such as choosing and designing props, working with costume pieces, and putting together scenic elements. It all culminates with an exciting chance to demonstrate how each aspect of performance comes together and becomes a part of the wonderfully rich history of the Academy of Music Theatre.
After two weeks of instruction and practice with some of the area’s most talented performance professionals, students in the program will come together to present a fully-staged, Broadway-style musical revue for family members from their households. The audience size will be limited this year due to COVID concerns. This special performance will take place on the afternoon of the second Friday. More details and information about the final showcase will be sent home with participants during the workshop.

Spotlight Intensive One-week program

Ages 13-16 years

Register Here!

Spotlight is our newest program designed for the driven performer. Students can expect to be challenged as solo performers during this workshop and allowed to push their musical theater skills beyond our work during Encore! During this workshop, our instructors work with a smaller group of students to focus deeply on the nitty-gritty of musical theater. Each year’s curriculum is designed based on enrollment, focusing on audition techniques for the student who hopes to pursue theater in school or community theater settings. Performers can expect to sing a song cut in front of their peers; learn dances at a slightly accelerated pace; and dig deeper into their theatrical training by way of monologue or scene study and improv comedy skills. This workshop is intimate and intense but rewarding.

At the end of the week, students present the work they prepared over the week in a semi-staged “working rehearsal” style showcase. This workshop’s fast-paced but supportive feel mimics a real audition and callback process to help performers build confidence in one of the theater’s most stressful events: THE AUDITION.

The daily schedule for Spotlight is never the same twice. Each day a new element is introduced in addition to reviewing the progress made on previous days. Although each individual is encouraged out of their comfort zone, we never lose sight of maintaining a supportive and fun atmosphere within our cast.

VIRTUAL PROGRAMMING:

Ovation weekly virtual class

Like our in-person programming, our virtual program is a setting where kids can have fun by moving their bodies and using their voices in a musical theater context. Virtual classes meet for one hour each weekday in the late afternoon (after the in-person camp day.) During that hour we teach a portion of a song and dance that will culminate in a final performance of the full song at the end of the week. Think of each session as a musical theater fitness class that combines musical theater dance and singing! All virtual activities will take place in your home via Zoom.

Four individual week-long classes will be offered concurrently with our in-person two-week programs, Second Act and Encore, during July. Families may choose to take part in the virtual class only or optionally add it to their child’s in-person experience for an addition fee. In this fashion, we can offer in-person only, virtual-only, and hybrid options depending on your family’s preference. Each virtual class will be open to ages 7-16 years. *Please note that there is no virtual component offered during the Spotlight Intensive or First Act! one-week programs.*
