ChoroFest Noho 2022
Welcome, and thanks for your interest in ChoroFest Noho, brought to you by Choro Camp New England! Much like its elder sister event, Django in June, Choro Camp New England brings serious students of Brazilian choro to the campus of Smith College for a week of study and jamming with masters of the genre. This concert will feature precisely those masters and serve as the grand finale of our week together.
If you are new to choro, you are in for a treat. The musical genre (pronounced SHORE-oo) began to take shape in mid-19th century Rio de Janeiro, where the music of the Portuguese court met that of Afro-Brazilians. Here in the US, a similar process gave birth first to ragtime, then jazz, and just as these are universally regarded as prototypically American, so too is choro recognized as uniquely, exquisitely Brazilian.
You’ll find individual profiles and videos of all the performers on the Artists page of chorocamp.com. We can’t provide videos of the exact groups you’ll enjoy this evening because, in truth, this exact collection of artists has never come together before, and likely never will again. From São Paulo, Alexandre Ribeiro and Douglas Lora on clarinet and guitar; from Brasilia, Ian Coury on bandolim; from Rio de Janeiro (by way of New York City) Vitor Gonçalves on accordion. And that’s just the start!
Visit all these artists online by following the link below. Then come get the live experience of Brazilian choro at its best by joining us at ChoroFest Noho 2022!
