NORTHAMPTON – Duane Robinson, 81, passed away Dec. 21, 2017, after a short illness.
He was born in Greenfield May 15, 1936, and grew up in both Pelham and Amherst. The only child of Gordon W. Robinson and Doris McClure Robinson. He worked for The Amherst Cinema, The Victory Theater in Holyoke, The House of Walsh Clothing Store in Amherst, and was the director of The Academy of Music Theatre in Northampton for 35 years.
Duane enlisted in the Air National Guard, and in October 1961, he was mobilized along with many others by President Kennedy to Phalsbourg Air Base, France. Duane attended Amherst Schools and one year at Amherst College. He loved walking on Newcomb Hollow Beach on Cape Cod and trips to Newport, Rhode Island, traveling to London for live theatre, concerts at Tanglewood, and going to the movies.
Duane was a big motor racing fan. He went to Riverside Park Speedway, went every year to Watkins Glen, New York, and then Montreal, Quebec, for the United States and Canadian Grands Prix Formula One races.
Duane is survived by his partner David Jenkins, and by three cousins: William Robinson and his wife Leona, Gerald Robinson and his wife Trina, and Susan Ramsden, as well as many, many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.
A memorial service will be held Friday Jan. 12 at 11 a.m. at Edwards Church in Northampton. There will be no calling hours, and burial will be held at the convenience of the family. Czelusniak Funeral Home is in charge.
