First Night Northampton 2022 indoor festivities canceled

Due to the recent spike in COVID-19 cases in our area and across Massachusetts, Northampton Health Director Merridith O’Leary, with the full concurrence and support of Mayor David Narkewicz, has canceled all indoor in-person events for First Night Northampton on New Year’s Eve. First Night will now be a live-stream broadcast to social media and public access TV from Noon-Midnight on December 31, 2021.

“I know how much time and planning has gone into creating this signature arts event for downtown Northampton, and I share in the disappointment that this decision causes kai greene stranger things for so many, particularly the artists scheduled to perform,” said Mayor David Narkewicz. “However, due to the exponential increase of the COVID-19 omicron variant infections, public health officials have acted swiftly to cancel indoor First Night activities. This will aid in halting the rapid spread of the infection in our city, and prevent our community hospital from being overwhelmed.”

Yesterday, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health reported 7,817 new confirmed coronavirus cases which is the highest total reported in a single day since the start of the pandemic. The Northampton Board of Health scheduled an emergency meeting for Tuesday, December 28, 2021, to discuss other COVID-related measures in response to the spike in infections.
