The Bronson Arroyo Band’s concert for Social InclusionSunday, August 9 at 7:00 pm
Boston Baseball Icon, Bronson Arroyo, has volunteered to help USP by playing a Benefit Concert for Social Inclusion, at the Academy of Music in Northampton.
Ultimate Sports Program concentrates on Social Inclusion, teaching kids with special needs and their more typical peers to simply play sports together without concern for their differences.
Bronson, the band’s lead singer, was a baseball icon who helped Boston celebrate it’s 1st World Championship in 86 years. The band plays originals as well as tributes to the likes of Pearl Jam, The Lumineers, Tom Petty, Nirvana, The Beatles, David Bowie and more!
USP, which was started in 2007 and is based out of Westfield, strives to have both typical and disabled kids enjoy athletic activities together, encouraging Social Inclusion through sports. Teaching athletes that you can have fun with each other regardless of ability.
Every week, Westfield State University gives USP two hours at the Parenzo Hall Gym to play sports ranging from Ultimate Football, Basketball and Kickball, to Soccer and Wiffleball.
Families come from all over Western Massachusetts to take part in sports where there is no cost nor obligation to show up each week. USP’s participants range from 5 to 60, with kids of all ages taking part.
Multiple times each year Westfield State students run kids through events at the Rock Wall inside the Woodward Center and the Ropes Course behind the Horace Mann Center.
USP holds annual, “Once in a Lifetime,” events, including playing on the Garden Floor during halftime of a Celtics game, Private tours of Fenway Park, Preseason Football with the Patriots and Sled Hockey with the Bruins. USP have gone Indoor Skydiving, Deep Sea Fishing, and Indoor Cart Racing.
USP takes Annual trips to Walt Disney World, where Disney gives families great prices on tickets and resorts.
Over 1500 kids have participated in the program in one capacity or another. Newsletters go out each week to a mailing list of almost 1100 families.
“It changes lives,” a parent said. “It’s incredible to see the way these kids interact. You can’t be around it and not have it change you in some way.”
To signup for their mailing list simply send an email to USPKids@outlook.com. Newsletters go out each week with details on weekly and special events.
