The Academy of Music in Northampton, like virtually every other theater, has gone digital. Movies are now projected from a device mounted under the balcony. The Academy’s projection room, with its massive 35mm movie projectors, is a thing of the past; both projectors will be gone within a month. To salute the end of an era, I wanted a shot in this room. It’s very small and I found it impossible to relate the experience of being there with a single still photo, but when I noticed the shadow created by a bare light bulb shining through the lower reel of a projector, it seemed fitting.
